From Saxophone to Piano

Updated: Jul 15, 2023

I recently got to tune for my alma mater, Mt Juliet High School, on behalf of AMO Pianos and it brought me so much joy to be back helping my old music teachers. I was there to tune their Charles Walter upright in preparation for their choir concert on May 9th; it was so nice to get to see the music teachers again!

I went to MJHS for all four years of my high school career, and I was very involved in the music programs. I joined the concert band in my freshman year, and the marching and jazz bands in my sophomore year, and stuck with them until I graduated. I had been playing the Alto Saxophone when I joined, and experimented with the other saxophones during my years there as well. I got to audition for the Mid State bands (which didn't go as well as I had hoped), and I enjoyed the privilege of attending the Festival of Winds and Percussion in the gold band, ranked third chair out of eight players.

Through the MJHS music programs, I learned music theory and tuning and I learned the intricacies of my instrument. More importantly, I learned how to be a leader and how to work hard on my goals, whether on my own or with others. I probably spent more time on the field working on our show than I did at home during marching season, and I learned perseverance during our twelve and a half hour long rehearsals on Saturdays. Many of my current values and ambitions can be attributed to my time at Mt Juliet.

So, while I now focus much of my time on the piano, whether it's repairing, tuning, or playing, I still remember fondly my days in the Band of Gold. This is why it makes me so happy to be able to go back and contribute to the program and see my old teachers; I truly have one of the best jobs I could have.
